Kasese has become an Investors destination

Although, located about 300 km from Uganda's city center, Kasese has become a prime investors destination. When God finished creating the Universe and saw it was very beautiful, he must have been looking at Kasese District. The district will this year be justifiably celebrating her 30th Birthday having been born in 1974 .

For over 50 years the Bakonzo and Bamba struggled to free themselves first from colonialism and suppression from the then Tooro autocracy.

The struggle Culminated in a bloody tribal war known as the Rwenzuru Freedom Fight spearheaded by the late Isaya Mukirania Kibanzanga, Father of Charles Wesley Mumbere Irema-Ngoma.

Mubere studying in the United States on Government is currently at the centre stage of the demand for Bakonzo Kingdom, locally kown as Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu.

Strategically positioned in western Uganda astride the Equator, between latitude 0 degrees and 26 degrees North longitudes 29 degrees and 42 degrees East ,30 degrees East and 42 degrees East and 30 degrees East and 18 degrees East, the district also enjoys a comparative advantage for eventual development of export to the nearest countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Burundi.

Her local neigbours include the districts of Bundibugyo to the North, Kabarole (North-East), Kamwenge (East), Bushenyi in the South.

The district's uniqueness cannot be over-emphasised from the exeptional diversity of contrasting physical features which range from expensive flat low lands through undulating hills to snow-capped mountains if the "mountains of moon" (the Rwenzoris), spiced with the spectacula flora and fauna.

Formerly known as the copper-mining giant because of the now defunct Kilembe Mines, the district is also endowed with cobalt, limestone, salt and clay among others.

Kasese hosts some of the giant industries in Uganda such as kasese Cobalt Company, the biggest single investment in the Country and the third in the continet and Hima Cement Factory.

Varying climatic conditions ranging from temperature, tropical, alpine to semi-arid planes and a bi-modal rainfall pattern have rendered the soils so fertile that this can support almost any agricultural activity.

The bimodal rainfall in March-May and Aug-Nov averaging between 800 and 1,600mm enables the people to grow crops through out the year.

The nemerous fresh rivers such as Rwimi,Mubuku, Hima, Sebwe, Nyamwanba, and Nyamughasani as well as the lakes George, Edward and Kazinga Channel provide huge irrigation and hydro-electric generation potentials rendering the district a favorite for the implimentation for the plan for Modernisation of Agriculture (PMA).

As the district chairman Yokasi Bihande Bwambale has often said, the Rwenzoris are the water suppliers to North Africa and Southern Europe to the extent that if the Rwenzori caught flu, those regions would sneeze.

Kasese is also home for cash and food crops that include coffee, cotton, Okra, vanilla, moringa, oleifera, apples, passion fruits, onions, hot pepper, tomatoes, paw paws, cassava, sim sim, irish potatoes, sunflower and soya beans.

The district has rural product of sh54.6b mostly from agriculture(88%) and livestock sectors (12%) Agriculture, livestock and forestry constitute 63%,26% and 9% while the artisan sector contributes 1%.

"The political governace in Kasese district is commited to economic growth through the liberal economic policies," the cheif administrative officer Giles Kahika, says in District Investment profile due to be launched at its 30th birthday.

President Yoweri is expected to lay the foundation stone for sh 1.6billion administration block the district plans to construct.

The district has managed to establish a very supportive infrastructure linking all the twenty-one subcounties and three urban councils, with good feeder roads,Kasese and Mweya airfields, good trunk roads to the neigbouring districts and the RDC.

In place are also reliable electric power gravity water flows,Messiah Radio 97.5 FM and Grace Radio 94.2 FM, a well-developed MTN and Celetel telecommunications network and website: www.kasese.go.ug added to UTL (district access code is 0483).
What remains in the balance is the now defunct 333km Kasese-Kampala railway which wound up bussiness with the collapse of copper.

Arrangements are in high gear to spice the airwaves with yet another disrict community radio thanks to the belgium through her technical arm,the Belgium Technical Cooperation (BTC).

With two hotels- Hotel Magherita on the roof of the busy rwenzori mountains and Mweya Safari Lodge in the warm romantic Queen Elizabeth National park,Kahika justifiably says. "The quality and cost of living in Kasese comapred favourably with what an investor may hope to find elsewhere in the country.

There is a new hotel that is coming up and this will greatly increase Kasese's opportunities of tourists.

Although, it has suffered as a result of the rebel activities in the late 1990s, Kasese is determined to rise and shine.
