Kasese district was formed in 1974 under the Provincial Administration of Rwenzori district that was curved out of Tooro. Prior to this, it was part of Toro kingdom that comprised the present districts of Bundibugyo, Kabarole, Kyenjojo, Kamwenge and Kasese.

Kasese district is located along the Equator in the western region of Uganda. It borders the districts of Kabarole and Bundibugyo in the north, Lake George and Kamwenge in the east, Bushenyi and Lake Edward in the south and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west.

Kasese pursues her development vision
Determined to fulfil her mission “to efficiently and effectively provide quality services to the people in conformity with national policies and local priorities”, and vision “to have a poverty free society”, Kasese district has emerged on a number of strategies.

Provision of minimum health care package, adequate and quality infrastructure, quality basic education, effective management and sustainable utilisation of natural resources in addition to promotion of the vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, is one such strategy.

Apart from keeping law and order and strengthening Kasese's capacity to deliver its mandate, the district aspires to promote efforts aimed at increasing household incomes.

To achieve her objectives, Kasese draws a budget and work plans every financial year. Accordingly, the 2009/2010, Kasese district Local Government has budgeted for over Shs 30bn, which is expected from three main sources – central government, donors and local revenue.

Led by the Rev Canon Julius B. Kithaghenda, the district chairperson, the district is headquartered at Rukoki, on the Kasese-Fort Portal highway. The chairman, with other elected members councillors make up the 39-member district council, the supreme organ of the district.

Demarcated into two countries, Busongora and Bukonzo, the district has two rural sub-counties, 105 parishes, 603 villages.

With the procurement and supply to farmers of 35,000? vanilla vines, 2,250? fruits and 200? bags of cassava, there is hope for improved household incomes.

Administration
Kasese District has 24 lower local governments, 20 of them rural sub counties, one municipality and 3 town councils. The district has two counties: Bukonzo County and Busongora and five parliamentary constituencies; one of which is represented by a woman.

Weather

Kasese receives an average rainfall ranging between 900-1600mm annually and two rain seasons that come between March to May and August to November. Temperatures normally range between 23.9ºc and 30.0ºc.

 

Population

Kasese District is estimated to be having a population of 669,958 people with a population growth rate of 3.6% per annum. It is estimated that there are 133,992 households with an average of 4.9 people per household.

But there are also other groups in the district who include the Banyankole, Basongora and Bakiga. There is also common usage of English, Swahili and Luganda.

 

Infrastructure

The presence of a tarmac road linking Kasese to other districts like Kabarole and Bushenyi, however, enables the district to transport its produce to other parts of the country.

Most of the produce from Kasese gets markets in urban centres in the western and central regions of Uganda. Passion fruits for example are one of the main crops from Kasese sold in most urban areas throughout the country. Tomatoes in Kasese

Kasese district produces several food and cash crops and livestock products. Over 85 percent of the people in the district depend on agriculture for their livelihood. Among the food crops produced in the area are finger millet, cassava, maize, ground nuts, sorghum, potatoes and matooke. The district also practices horticulture farming that includes fruits like passion fruits and vegetables.

Kasese district has one district hospital and 63 health units, out of which 16 are government-aided while 46 are privately owned. The various healthy units owned by the government are categorised as Health Centre 1V which are units at county level; Health Centre III are at sub county level and Health Centre II which are operate at parish level.

Although the district health services have been facing many constraints that include inadequacy of health facilities, delayed disbursement of funds from the government and understaffing, some achievements have been made. Among them is the construction of two maternity wards at Kasanga and Karambi and an outpatient department block.

The district has also constructed a medical theatre at Busongora North health sub-district while a doctor’s house is under construction.
